I like to train to a high line of good behavior, but sometimes they are looking for ‘good enough.’ That doesn’t always work.” “I have to figure out just what the client thinks is acceptable. Over her years of training she has realized that her expertise is not always immediately translated to dog owners. You want to be more than a meat anchor to a dog. “If they only do it when you use a cookie, that’s not enough. The dog should be reliable on the command and that’s when they are trained. Use a treat, give the command, position the dog.” Then pull and push with your hands in a rocking motion until they are down. First step is to wave a treat to get their attention. “You have to be able to control your dog and that involves hands-on training,” she says. She says training involves physical coordination.
